The best way to survive journeys with children? guidelines for long car journeys with your kids

Below are tips to help make your long car journey with babies and young children excellent:

Deciding on the best time of day for your car tour will help with your baby or toddler's mood for travelling. If you can drive at night while your baby sleeps calmly in the back, might make all the difference. Failing this, make sure that your children is fed and dry before setting off. The more comfortable she is, the more content she will be to sit for longer.

With young children, you most likely have to stop if you're travel for longer than two hours. Even if they don't need the loo, the possibility to run around and stretch their legs will certainly cheer them no end and minimize boredom. How many stops will you need? Add up to 45 minutes for each one to give some a realistic arrival time.

Portable DVD players are great for car journeys – you may get ones that hook over the back of the front car seats, or even dual ones to let two children can enjoy a screen each. Bring a stash of their most favourite DVDs and you're done. MP3 players and iPods are a decent investment, too, which enable it to be played through the car radio, plugged into a couple of speakers - or, if your tolerance for Kipper stories on loop was exhausted a couple of miles back - listened to via suitable headphones.

Stock up on basics stuff for instance baby wipes and water.Lots of baby wipes are required. Besides bottles of drinking water, we keep several big jerrycans of 5 and 10 litres of water in the boot, pretty much permanently. At some point you’ll be grateful you did too. (Spills, puke, poo, sand, mud etc.) We as well keep a roll of black bin bags in the boot as typically a complete set of clothing or shoes needs separated from whatever else until such time it can be dealt with suitably.

If kids are sleeping as you approach a destination and are going to need to be awake for a time once you get there, start to wake them quickly and therefore they have a chance to surface slowly instead having to be instantly awake immediately after you arrive
