Review BMW i8 2015 get popular category as The World Green Car

The auto industry has done a fantastic about-face in less than a decade, jumping its concentration from gas-guzzling SUVs to fuel-sipping hybrids and gas-free electric vehicles. That has made gaining honors like the World Green Car of the Year even more important, and this time around the winner is the BMW i8, that makes it the second consecutive win for BMW in such a reputable category.

The BMW i8 was elected from an initial entry list of 10 modern global vehicles, then a short number of three finalists that included the winning BMW i8 besides the Mercedes-Benz S 500 Plug-In Hybrid and the Volkswagen Golf GTE were on the move to World Green Car being announced in New York.

The i8 is a plug-in hybrid. When you charge it, it can go 15 miles on battery power before the engine requires to help out. Over normal traveling kilometers, the EPA claims the regular American could possibly get the equivalent of 76 mpg, if they drive it sedately. That’s just how it moves in all-electric mode, each time it operates as a front-wheel-drive car with an economical 129 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Top speed for zero-emissions propulsion is 75 mph, and it takes its sweet, silent time getting there.

Among the front wheels there’s a 96-kilowatt electric motor--the equivalent of 131 horsepower. It deploys power to the front wheels thru a two-speed transmission. In the back, there’s a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine delivering 231-horsepower. That power runs to the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission.

Get the BMW i8 into Comfort mode, and the i8 serves like a hybrid, mixing gas and electric power as needed. Go faster than 40 mph, and it transfers power to every wheel, for all-wheel drive.
